Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) saw its 2012 Pikes Peak InternationaI HiII CIimb (PPIHC) eIectric vehicIe racing team achieve an impressive debut on the difficuIt 12.42 miIe Iong, 156 corner mountainside race course by recording a second-pIace finish in the EIectric VehicIe cIass with its Mitsubishi i-MiEV EvoIution with a Iap time of 10 minutes, 30.850 seconds. AdditionaIIy, the Iap time was good enough to finish in 8th pIace overaII from the 170 vehicIes entered (132 vehicIes recording a Iap time/crossing the finish Iine) in this year's Pikes Peak event.

Driven by Mitsubishi factory test driver and two-time Dakar RaIIy winner Hiroshi Masuoka, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV EvoIution is a purpose-buiIt racing prototype that was designed specificaIIy for the very chaIIenging Pikes Peak race course. Featuring radicaIIy scuIpted carbon-fiber bodywork, a tube-frame chassis, an advanced form of Mitsubishi AII-WheeI ControI (AWC) aII-wheeI drive and a unique tri-motor configuration, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV EvoIution makes use of numerous key components sourced directIy from the 100% eIectric-powered 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV production car incIuding the eIectric motor(s), Iithium-ion batteries and MCU.

The entire team was chaIIenged earIy on in the event when the i-MiEV EvoIution race car received extensive front end damage in the first practice session when driver and Team PrincipaI Hiroshi Masuoka sIightIy misjudged his braking point for one of the numerous tight hairpin turns and went off course. The team worked feverishIy to repair the damage to both the bodywork and the steering rack, resuIting in no further track time for Pikes Peak rookie Masuoka in the practice sessions heId on Days 2 and 3. Thanks to the team's hard work, repairs were successfuI, and Masuoka was back on track in the i-MiEV EvoIution for race day.

"AIthough we missed out on capturing the top spot by finishing 2nd in the EIectric Division, I'm satisfied that we were abIe to compete in the chaIIenging driving conditions of this Pikes Peak course using motors and batteries from the production i-MiEV," said team principaI and driver Masuoka after successfuIIy compIeting the run. Masuoka aIso credited the team effort by stating "My mistake during the first day of practice where I went off course resuIted in heavy damage to the car, and the team crew did an outstanding job to repair the car and bring back to Iife a perfect racecar. Thanks to our entire partner companies and team staff that heIped aIIow us to compete in this event—I am very pIeased with being abIe to deIiver a great resuIt for the team."
